Elev8

An Effective Practice

Description

Elev8 is an initiative that brings together schools, families, and community partners to promote education, health, and safety in middle schools in low-income areas. The program focuses on middle school students because children who are able to transition from middle school to high school smoothly are more likely to continue on to--and graduate from--college; in addition, the majority of dropouts occur in the 9th grade in 60% of the largest school systems in the U.S.

Elev8 provides extended learning opportunities for students after school, offering classes in subjects such as math, science, and technology. Students can also participate in programs in the arts, cultural activities, community service groups, and mentoring services. To promote students' health and well-being, which are critical for academic success, Elev8 runs school-based health clinics and Family Resource Centers to help parents provide a safer, healthier, and more stable home environment. Elev8 further engages parents by offering English lessons and employment services, which lessens the alienation that parents in underserved communities often feel.

Goal / Mission

Elev8 brings together schools, families and the community in low-income areas to ensure that students succeed in school and in life.

Results / Accomplishments

An independent evaluation of the Elev8 initiative is currently underway, but the program has already measured some positive outcomes. In Oakland, 75% of parents reported improved academic performance among students participating in Elev8's extended learning programs. In one Elev8 school in New Mexico, standardized math test scores have increased by 45% following the implementation of Elev8. Outside of the classroom, 70% of students in Elev8 schools report that, through the School-Based Health Centers, they were able to receive health services sooner or access resources that were previously unavailable. In addition, nearly 2,700 parents and other community members have utilized Elev8's support services over the past three years, including job training, emergency services, financial support, and counseling.
