Age-Adjusted Hospitalization Rate due to Suicide and Intentional Self-inflicted Injury

County: McCormick
Measurement Period: 2017-2019
This indicator shows the age-adjusted hospitalization rate due to suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury per 100,000 population aged 18 years and older. Admissions are included if a primary or additional diagnosis code indicates suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury.

Why is this important?

Suicide is a major public health issue that affects people of all ages in the United States; more than 39,000 lives are lost each year due to suicide. However, many more people survive suicide attempts than actually die. Suffocation and poisoning are two of the most common forms of intentional, self-inflicted injury that lead to hospitalizations. Risk factors include depression, physical/mental illness, alcohol/substance abuse, incarceration, and loss or other stressful life events. Gender differences are apparent: although females are more likely to report attempting suicide than males, males are more likely to actually die from suicide than females. Studies show that addressing psychiatric illness through early recognition, intervention, and treatment is an effective way to combat suicidal behavior.
