Best Practices Report: Energy Efficiency

An Effective Practice

Description

In this report you will find information on: retrofitting both existing homes and community structures; utilizing the increasing support of the "Building Green" movement; and gaining ideas from case studies of community associations across the country that have demonstrated success in reducing energy consumption and costs.

Goal / Mission

Currently, the average U.S. family spends nearly $1,300 a year on energy bills, with much of that energy being wasted due to air leaks, inefficient appliances, and a general lack of attention to this important issue. The Community Associations Institute (CAI) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are dedicated to educating the community association industry--and the significant portion of the U.S. population it represents--on the many ways to increase the energy efficiency of their homes, and thereby reduce both energy consumption and costs.

Results / Accomplishments

By making their homes more energy efficient, various communities have seen large reductions in their energy bills. For example, in Arizona homeowners who had more efficient homes saved an average of $54 per month on energy costs.
