Description

The Rock Island Railroad Depot (RIRD) was renovated by the city of Liberal, Kansas using Transportation Enhancements (TE) funds, community business and housing grants. The RIRD was renovated as part of an effort to revitalize the city and now houses offices, meeting rooms, a small museum, and a restaurant.

In 2001 the renovation of a second building was completed and the space was leased to the Veteran’s Administration, providing a much-needed source of healthcare for veterans who previously had to travel many miles to see a physician.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the renovation of the Rock Island Railroad Depot was to revitalize the city of Liberal, Kansas.

Results / Accomplishments

The town of Liberal, Kansas received a Community Achievement Award in 1998 for the revitalization efforts as an “outstanding example of the economic and community development in the state.” The Rock Island Railroad Depot also received an Award of Excellence from the Kansas Preservation Alliance in 2002 and has since become the center of the business district in the town.
