Founded in 1981, Isles, Inc. is a community development and environmental organization based in Trenton, New Jersey. Isles provides a unique, one-stop array of self-help services that educate and train people, revitalize places, restore health and the environment, and build assets. Isles' services include green building and real estate development, community planning, micro-business and wealth creation, foreclosure prevention, environmental health, urban agriculture, youth training and education, green job training, energy services, research and other support services.

Isles' mission is to foster more self-reliant families in healthy, sustainable communities.

Results / Accomplishments

Since its founding in 1981, Isles has invested $45.7 million to rebuild 430 homes. Over 600 YouthBuild students have completed the program, 125 micro-business owners have been trained, 1,500 families have been counseled in homeownership, and 15,000 youth and teachers have been trained in environmental education. Through the program 170 community gardens have been planted, and 1,000 trees have been planted along streets. Isles has tested 1,100 homes for lead contamination. Thousands of Trenton community residents and employers participated in exercise and nutrition activities, neighborhood planning, parent training, brownfield cleanup, and policy advocacy. Since April of 2008, more than 125 families have received foreclosure assistance, and 28 family homes have been saved from foreclosure.
