Health Science in Motion

A Good Idea

Description

Launched in 2010 by collaboration of Prime Time Palm Beach County and the South Florida Science Museum, Health Science in Motion (HSIM) is a four-week educational after-school program that aims to increase the interest of at-risk youth in health sciences and encourages future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The curriculum includes two units on (1) heart health and healthy eating and (2) DNA and heredity, and is based on hands-on activities, such as building stethoscopes, artificial hearts, and edible models of DNA. HSIM is funded by The Quantum Foundation.

Goal / Mission

The goal of HSIM is to increase at-risk youth interest in health sciences through its hands-on curriculum on the heart and DNA.

Results / Accomplishments

According to curriculum educators, after six months of implementation, participating youth showed significant post-knowledge gains. Curriculum practitioners themselves also reported gains in their instructional practices and dissemination techniques.
