An Effective Practice

Description

New York City established two specialized Refugee and Immigrant Job Centers designed to serve clients whose primary language is not English. The first center opened in lower Manhattan in April 2001, and the second in Brooklyn in January 2002. Like their non-specialized counterparts, the specialized Job Centers process TANF, Food Stamp and Medicaid applications, as well as provide ongoing case management and services to clients.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program is to provide assistance to clients whose primary language is not English.

Results / Accomplishments

Approximately 90 percent of the cases handled by these centers are limited English proficient. Together, the two centers serve about 6,000-6,500 cases.
